Abstract

PCR technology is available in South Africa at LANCET LABORATORIES’ premises in Richmond, Johannesburg. Their PCR laboratory was established in 1993 by Dr. Carolyn Tsilimigras. Since then it has shown extensive growth both in size and expertise. Today it is the largest PCR laboratory in the southern hemisphere and the only 24-hour laboratory in Africa. Over 11 000 tests are performed in a month. Samples arrive daily from Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Maputo, Namibia and from as far as Kenya.
