Tuberculosis and the emergence of drug resistance

Abstract


Even though tuberculosis is a notifiable disease, South Africa faces one of the worst tuberculosis (TB) epidemics in the world. As a result of inappropriate or ineffective treatment, multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) has arisen in all nine provinces, placing a severe burden on our health system. Recently, a more dangerous strain of Tuberculosis
has developed namely Extreme Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (XDR-TB).
