Abstract

In South Africa almost half of the population reside in informal settlements and make use of parafin stoves for cooking, heating and lighting. Because of the high number of informal settlements in South Africa, approximately 40‡ 000 households are affected by burns every year (National Injury Mortality Statistics, 2002).
