Abstract
Since their introduction in the early 1940s, more than 150 antibiotics have been developed. An understanding of the various classes of antibiotics, their spectra of activity, efficacy in the treatment of infectious disease and their side-effect profiles, can help to alleviate the potential problems caused by the inappropriate use of these medicines. The issue of bacterial resistance continues to drive the search for new compounds, which have increased stability and efficacy against resistant pathogens.
