Abstract
For many years it was believed that the uterus provided a protected environment in which the developing foetus could grow. However, in 1941 an Australian doctor observed that women who contracted rubella during their first trimester frequently gave birth to babies with certain problems, mainly defects in the heart, eyes and ears. This led to the realisation that external factors could affect the foetus.
